How the Moroccan bac average is calculated
Your Moroccan baccalaureate general average is not a plain mean of your marks. It mixes three results earned over two school years, each with its own weight. This guide explains the bac average calculation step by step: how the regional exam, the national exam and continuous assessment fit together, which average gives which mention, who can sit the catch-up session, and how to calculate any average with coefficients. The rules come from the candidate guide of the Ministry of Education's national exams centre (CNEE).
The bac average formula: 50%, 25%, 25%
For school candidates, meaning students enrolled in a public or private high school, the general average combines:
- the national exam average, 50%, sat at the end of the final year (second year of the bac);
- the regional exam average, 25%, sat at the end of the first year;
- the continuous assessment average, 25%, built from the tests of the final year.
In one line: general average = (2 × national + regional + continuous assessment) / 4. The national exam counts twice, which is why it carries half of the result. One extra point in the national exam is worth two extra points in the regional exam, so a strong national can make up for a weak regional, while the reverse takes much more effort.
Regional exam, national exam and continuous assessment
The regional exam (examen régional unifié) is held at the end of the first year of the bac cycle and covers some of that year's subjects, set by ministerial decision. Its mark is kept for the next year and counts for 25% of the bac average, but the class council does not use it to decide whether you move up: moving to the second year depends on continuous assessment only. Families of students who move up with a regional average below 8/20 can ask for the first year to be repeated. Candidates who missed regional tests for a serious reason can sit a catch-up regional session.
The national exam (examen national unifié) is held at the end of the final year. It covers the subjects that define your stream plus the second foreign language, and it carries half of the general average.
Continuous assessment groups the tests taken in class throughout the final year, in every subject of your stream. It is worth 25%. Free candidates (candidats libres) have no continuous assessment: their average is the weighted mean of their exam subjects with their coefficients, which you can work out in the coefficients tab.
Bac mentions: from Passable to Très bien
You pass with a general average of 10/20 or more, provided you have no eliminatory mark. The mention on your certificate depends on that average:
| General average | Result | In Arabic |
|---|---|---|
| 16 or more | Mention Très bien | حسن جداً |
| 14 to under 16 | Mention Bien | حسن |
| 12 to under 14 | Mention Assez bien | مستحسن |
| 10 to under 12 | Mention Passable | مقبول |
| 7 to under 10 | Catch-up session | الدورة الاستدراكية |
| Under 7 | Not admitted | غير ناجح |
The calculator shows the mention your marks reach, and its table gives the national exam average you need for each one.
The catch-up session (rattrapage)
An average below 10 does not always end the year. School candidates can sit the catch-up session when they have a general average of at least 7/20 and no eliminatory mark, or at least 10/20 with an eliminatory mark in a single national exam subject. Candidates who missed ordinary session tests for a serious reason can sit it too.
The catch-up session is held at least ten days after the ordinary session results. You retake every national exam subject. Since the 2012 session, your national average is recalculated with the better of your two marks in each subject, so a weaker catch-up mark in one subject never lowers your result. Your regional and continuous assessment marks do not change.
Worked examples of the bac average
A pass with Bien. Salma has 14.50 in the national exam, 12 in the regional exam and 16 in continuous assessment: (2 × 14.50 + 12 + 16) / 4 = 57 / 4 = 14.25. She passes with mention Bien.
A catch-up case. Yassine has 6 in the national exam, 9 in the regional exam and 13 in continuous assessment: (2 × 6 + 9 + 13) / 4 = 8.50. He is under 10 but above 7, so he can sit the catch-up session. To reach 10 he needs a national average of 9: (2 × 9 + 9 + 13) / 4 = 10. With the same regional and continuous marks, 16 would need 21 in the national exam, which is impossible.
Planning before the national exam. You already know two of the three marks before June. With 11.50 in the regional exam and 13.75 in continuous assessment, an average of 14 needs (4 × 14 - 11.50 - 13.75) / 2 = 15.38 in the national exam. Enter your two marks in the calculator to get this target for 10, 12, 14 and 16 at once.
How to calculate an average with coefficients
Every average in this system is a weighted average: multiply each mark by its coefficient, add the products, then divide by the sum of the coefficients. That is how you work out a semester average, your regional exam average or your national exam average from your subject marks, using the coefficients of your stream given by your school.
A mark of 15 with coefficient 7 and a mark of 10 with coefficient 2 give (15 × 7 + 10 × 2) / 9 = 125 / 9 = 13.89, while a plain mean would give 12.50. The average with coefficients tab does this for as many subjects as you need and keeps your rows in this browser, so you can update them after each test. To skip the typing, pick your stream and level in the list above the rows: it fills in the exam subjects and their official coefficients, listed in the table of coefficients by stream below.
Common mistakes
- Taking a plain mean of the three parts. With 14.50, 12 and 16, a plain mean gives 14.17 instead of 14.25, because the national exam counts twice.
- Using first-year continuous assessment. The 25% of continuous assessment comes from the final year; the first year counts only through the regional exam.
- Rounding up the mention. 13.99 is still Assez bien: Bien starts at 14.
- Forgetting eliminatory marks. Even with 10 or more, an eliminatory mark means you are not admitted directly; with one in a single national subject you go to the catch-up session.

Bac coefficients by stream
These are the national exam subjects of the second year and their coefficients for school candidates, the same ones the stream list in the coefficients tab fills in for you. Subjects graded only through continuous assessment are not included.
